Stay cool with our summer cycling tips

There has never been a better time to get out and about in the UK on your bike. Cycling holidays have boomed post-pandemic, so we have put together our tips on keeping safe this summer out on the roads! Now that we have hit the warmer months, you may face a few extra challenges with the heat and sun, but sticking with these tips will help make your rider safer, easier and more fun!

Check the road surface
British summer can bring all types of weather, whether that’s heavy rain, strong sun, or thunder. With varying weather conditions, road surfaces must be checked out prior to the start of the ride. When it’s a hot day, tarmac can melt and cause areas of slippery or sticky tar. This can cause havoc with your tyres and ultimately can make cycling really dangerous especially when going around corners! When it rains, potholes and deep puddles are going to be the main problem for cyclists. Keep an eye when cycling that you don’t end up going into one as that can damage your bike or worse, injure you.

Dress for the weather!
Clothes with dry-fit properties will help with cooling and prevent sweat build up. Base layers are essential when helping with the removal of sweat and also keep you warm when you have cooled off.

Keep hydrated
A big problem among cyclists is remembering to stay hydrated. When cycling in hot weather, you perspire more and so naturally your body will sweat and evaporate quickly. Drinking little and often will ensue your body retains enough water to maintain hydration.

The cool down
It may be tempting so douse yourself in ice cold water to cool down, but this can result in you actually warming up! When ice touches the skin, blood vessels constrict which brings blood back to your core to try to maintain body temperature. Instead, it’s best to pour cool water over your neck and wipe it down with a cooler damp towel.

If riding with your little ones, the same applies. Make sure you bring lots of water and sun cream to keep them topped up throughout the day. If the road surface is too hot, it may be an idea to wait until later in the day or first thing in the morning before taking them out. That will help with their cycling too, as cooler weather is likely to improve their concentration. However if riding in the evening, make sure to bring all the right safety equipment such as lights and reflectors incase you get caught out after dusk!

After your ride, make sure you store your bike is stored away safe and ready for it's next outing. The Eurobike award-winning CLUG is the world's smallest bike rack. Working seamlessly with your floor to store your bike, CLUG is used to store your bikes either vertically or horizontally. CLUG (which is a cross between a clip and a hug for your bike), is compatible with tyres between 23-81mm (1-3.2"). CLUG is perfect for your garage or shed and the easiest way to store your bike after a long ride!
